OK so this is this time I have done a blog.
Thought I would start one for a few reasons really, One so I can remember the whole joining process and journey into the royal navy mine clearance diver and two to help anyone else out there who might be thinking of doing the same. As I have it is not easy to get information on the subject.
--APPLICATION--
As I live in Plymouth I have a AFCO (Armed Forces Careers Office) so I just went into to have a chat to someone that knew about the subject of mine clearance diving. To Be honest I didn’t get an awful lot of information but did end up with an application form and the awareness it take up to 24 months to get in(that’s right 2 years). best info for clearance diver is found on the royal navy website
(http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/careers/careers-roles/combat-operations/mine-clearance-diver/)
the application is very simple, it is like any other application except it doesn’t ask for any of your past work experience. Trust me the application is the easiest part of the whole process.
I would say you need to know you really want to do this from the outset because it is a long process, it can take up to 6 months just getting to the point of your joining date.
The way the process works
- Filling in and sending application.
- Invited to sit a physcometric test.
- Eye test
- Then get invited to formal interview.
- You then get sent to have a full dive medical.
By an independent company hopefully near your area. - Then it’s your PJFT (Pre Joining Fitness Test).
- Finally it’s the PEDA (Pre Entry Dive Acquaint).
Only after these 7 steps will you then be giving a joining date into the navy to start basic training at HMS Rayleigh in Saltash, Cornwall.
